ACTOR Jonathan Rhys Meyers will make his return to television as both the male lead and producer in 'Dracula'.
The Cork-raised star flew back to Ireland yesterday to attend a screening of the NBC series with Irish co-stars Victoria Smurfit and Katie McGrath in Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral.
'Dracula' marks the 36-year-old's comeback to big budget TV for the first time since 'The Tudors'.
He said that he considered turning down the project initially, for fear it wouldn't be "different", so when he accepted the job he wanted to add modern elements to Bram Stoker's famous story.
"It's the first time I've ever been a producer on something so I really wanted to make it (fresh). It had to be incredibly fast paced, to bring it up to the 21st century," he said.
Audiences are introduced to Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur.
As the action unfolds his true intentions – to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries earlier – come to light.
Former 'Ballykissangel' actress Smurfit plays Jayne Wetherby in the thriller and her ambitious character tries to pursue him. "It was lovely, like having a corner of Paddys in Budapest while filming," Rhys Meyers said.
The series, set in the 1890s, also features 'Game of Thrones' star Nonso Anozie and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
The 10-part re-telling of Bram Stoker's famous novel will kick off on Sky on October 31.
