The 'Dracula' star, who has been to rehab three times for alcohol addiction, is always looking for "some sort of balance" in his life, but believes his inner conflict makes him a better actor.
The 36-year-old star said: "I'm cast as a bad guy because I look like one. And I can convey that sense of conflict because I'm a guy who lives with conflict a lot of the time. It's not something that I have to search for - that sense of looking for some sort of peace, looking for some sort of balance. It's evident in me regardless of what I do, so maybe it just suits the parameters of Dracula."
The Cork actor has had a tough time over the past 12 months since signing on to star in the new TV series, which is produced by both NBC and Sky.
He added: "I've gone to two funerals. My grandfather and my best friend passed away during this production. So I went back and put them to rest. I don't get many breaks."
Jonathan insists he is glad to be back on the small screen even though he needed a break after wrapping up production on 'The Tudors' in 2010.
He said: "I signed on to 'The Tudors' thinking it was only going to be one season. I didn't want it to be four seasons. I didn't expect it to be. When I found out, I was slightly horrified.
"Let me tell you, doing a series is like making four movies at once. You have a lot more room to explore a character, but you've got much more room to fall over on you're arse as well. By season three, I was not happy doing it."

Jonathan Rhys Meyers: Dracula is very different to Twilight ( Bang Showbiz Date: 21 October 2013 )

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is currently playing Dracula in Sky Living's 10-part TV show named after the vicious blood-sucking being and thinks it shows vampires in a different light to 'Twilight.'
Jonathan Rhys Meyers believes 'Dracula' shows vampires in a different light to 'Twilight'.
The 36-year-old actor is currently playing the vicious blood-sucking being in Sky Living's 10-part TV show, but he doesn't feel a pressure to perform the role in a certain way because he thinks the target audience are after something different to the romantic fantasy sequel.
Speaking to BANG Showbiz, he said: "This is not 'Twilight', some guy with a James Dean hair cut running around trees because that's YA [young adult], that's sort of for little girls who wet themselves. This isn't about that. This is about what it really really means to suffer for love. This is what it means to have everything taken away from you."
Jonathon was quick to praise 'Twilight' and 'True Blood' for their success, but admits his upcoming show has no competition with any of the other vampire-based programmes or movies because 'Dracula' addresses real-life.
He explained: "'True Blood' has a wonderful audience. It's a very clever idea. 'Twilight' has a wonderful audience. It's a very clever idea. But that's not what we're making. What we're making is something that is much more adult than that. I'm not looking for a 14 or a 15 year old to sit and watch this.
"I'm looking for a 26-35 to 45 year old who will actually know what it's like to be divorced, lose a child, lose a job and to fall in love."
'Dracula' starts on October 31 at 9pm on Sky Living HD.
